Ski freerideTangram Ski Circus sits on a forested hillside in northern Nagano, Japan - a self-contained resort hotel and ski area that's linked to neighbouring Madarao Kogen by a shared lift system. Where Madarao is known for its tight tree runs and powder-hunting culture, Tangram takes a different approach: wider, more open slopes, a full-service resort hotel with pool, onsen, and multiple restaurants, and an atmosphere that's geared firmly towards families and relaxed skiing. The two mountains complement each other well, and a combined lift pass covers both, giving you the option of cruising Tangram's groomers in the morning and exploring Madarao's famous beech forest in the afternoon.
The Tangram ski area has around 19 runs across varied terrain, rising from the resort base at roughly 800m to around 1,320m. The piste is spread across a single, well-shaped mountain face with a natural bowl layout that catches snow from the prevailing north-westerly systems. Northern Nagano receives heavy, consistent snowfall - around 10-12 metres annually in the Tangram-Madarao area - and the snow quality is excellent, particularly on the shaded upper slopes. The runs are well groomed and clearly marked, with a balance of beginner and intermediate terrain that makes the mountain easy to navigate from your first morning. The season typically runs from mid-December through to late March.
The Tangram resort hotel is the centre of everything here - accommodation, dining, onsen, and evening entertainment all under one roof, connected directly to the slopes. It's a format that works particularly well for families and groups who want convenience without having to navigate a village or arrange transport. The hotel's indoor pool, games room, and spa mean there's always something to do away from the snow, and the Madarao link adds depth for anyone wanting to explore further. For UK families looking for a hassle-free Japanese ski experience in a genuinely snowy part of the country, Tangram is a smart, comfortable choice.
