New Zealand’s ski season runs from June to October, flipping the calendar on European and North American skiing. The main resorts cluster around the South Island’s Southern Alps, with each base town offering a different pace and personality. Here’s a quick steer.
Wanaka is a strong family pick – it's relaxed, easy to navigate, and close to Cardrona, which has dedicated beginner and kids' areas. Queenstown works well too if you want more to do off the mountain: lake cruises, walking trails, and plenty of restaurants to keep everyone happy in the evenings. New Zealand is a great place to learn. Coronet Peak and Cardrona both have well-run ski schools with gentle nursery slopes, and the quieter mountains mean less pressure than busier European resorts. Lesson quality is high, and the smaller scale of the ski areas makes them easier to get around as a first-timer.
Treble Cone, near Wanaka, has some of the best advanced terrain in the country – long runs, natural half-pipes, and genuine backcountry access. The Remarkables, just outside Queenstown, offer steep chutes and off-piste opportunities in a dramatic setting. For something truly different, heli-skiing is widely available across the South Island. Queenstown is the clear winner here. It's a year-round adventure town with a bar and restaurant scene that punches well above its size – craft breweries, lakeside dining, and late-night spots all within walking distance. Wanaka is quieter but has a growing food scene and a handful of good bars with lake views. If après is high on your list, Queenstown is the one.
The season runs from mid-June to early October, with July and August offering the most reliable snow. September can be good for spring skiing with warmer temperatures and longer days.
Fly into Queenstown or Christchurch, typically via a stopover in Asia or the Middle East. Total travel time is roughly 24 hours. WeSki packages include flights, so you can compare routes and prices as part of your deal.
The ski areas are smaller than the Alps, but the scenery is exceptional and the slopes are far less crowded. Snow quality is generally good, and the range of terrain – from gentle nursery slopes to serious backcountry – means there's something for every level.
It's comparable to mid-range European resorts. The main cost difference is the flight, which is longer and typically more expensive than a short-haul trip to the Alps. On the ground, food, accommodation, and ski passes are reasonable – and the uncrowded slopes are hard to put a price on.
It depends on the resort. Queenstown has shuttle services to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, but a car gives you more freedom – especially if you want to explore multiple ski areas. WeSki packages offer car rental as an option alongside transfers.
