Charme traditionnelSamnaun is the quieter, family-friendly, duty-free Swiss side of the Silvretta Arena - one of the largest interconnected ski areas in the Eastern Alps, shared with Ischgl across the border in Austria. While Ischgl is famous for its legendary après-ski and Top of the Mountain concerts, Samnaun offers a fundamentally different experience: a peaceful Engadin mountain village in Graubünden, Switzerland, where you can ski 239km of pistes across two countries by day and browse Europe's highest shopping street - entirely duty-free - in the evening. It's the only duty-free zone in Switzerland, with around 60 shops offering luxury brands, spirits, cosmetics, and Swiss products at tax-free prices. The combination of world-class skiing and tax-free shopping is unique in the Alps.
The Silvretta Arena spans from 1,400m to 2,872m at the Greitspitze summit, with 239km of groomed pistes, 15km of ski routes, and 46 modern lifts (including the world's first double-decker cable car) providing a transport capacity of around 97,000 skiers per hour. The terrain includes 38km of blue runs, 155km of reds, and 46km of blacks - a range that suits everyone from beginners to experts. The cross-border element is central to the experience: the famous Smugglers' Trail follows historic smuggling routes between Austria and Switzerland across 35km in three difficulty levels (Gold, Silver, and Bronze), and the 8km Duty-Free Run descends from the Palinkopf (2,864m) directly to Samnaun's shops. Over 1,100 snow cannons and the altitude (most slopes above 2,000m) ensure snow from late November to early May.
Samnaun village itself sits in a remote high valley in eastern Graubünden, close to the Austrian and Italian borders. The setting is traditional Engadin - wooden chalets, mountain views, and a pace of life that couldn't be more different from the party scene across the mountain in Ischgl. Children up to the age of 10 ski free in Samnaun, and the Kinderland WinterBlumenTraum provides a dedicated children's area with three magic carpets and a heated indoor play area. The south-facing Samnaun slopes catch the afternoon sun, while the north-facing Ischgl terrain provides cold, consistent snow - between the two sides, you have sunny cruising and shaded powder on the same pass. It's the best of both worlds: Ischgl's vast terrain without Ischgl's crowds or prices.
