Joyau cachéTucked into the Beaufortain valley in the French Alps, Arêches-Beaufort feels like a well-kept secret among those who know it. This is a traditional Savoyard farming village first and a ski resort second, and that's exactly what gives it its character. Stone chalets, a working dairy culture (Beaufort cheese is produced here), and a pace of life that's unhurried make it a world away from the big-name French stations. The resort holds the Green Snowflake label for its commitment to sustainable development, and was the first destination in France to develop ski touring as a mainstream activity.
The ski area splits across two linked sectors, Grand-Mont and Planay, climbing from 1,050m to 2,320m with a 1,300m vertical drop across 50km of pistes. Terrain is varied and well-distributed, with a mix of open alpine bowls higher up and tree-lined runs lower down. The Bovoland skicross area and WoodPark snowpark add variety, and 13 lifts keep queues virtually non-existent. With a reputation as a \"snow attic\", the Beaufortain receives generous snowfall for the northern Alps, and its season typically runs from late December through early April.
Away from the slopes, the village has authentic Savoyard charm. The dining scene leans into local tradition, with fondue, tartiflette, and dishes built around the famous Beaufort cheese. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular thanks to extensive Nordic trails, and the surrounding Beaufortain massif is stunning for winter walking. For anyone looking for a low-key mountain holiday, this resort delivers a genuine French alpine experience without the crowds.
