Axamer Lizum hosted alpine skiing events at both the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics and is known as Innsbruck's 'White Roof' for its reliable snow at altitude. Muttereralm, just next door above the villages of Mutters and Götzens, holds the official 'Tyrolean Family Ski Region' certification. Between them, you get around 55km of combined terrain and a ski holiday where mixed-ability groups can split between two mountains and meet for Käsespätzle at lunchtime.
Axamer Lizum is the bigger and more varied of the two, with 40km of pistes between 1,560m and 2,340m, served by 9 lifts including a modern 10-seater gondola and the legendary Olympiabahn funicular. The terrain is weighted towards intermediate and advanced skiing, with 11 blue runs, 12 reds, one black, and - crucially - over 300 hectares of marked freeride area and multiple ski routes that make it one of the most respected off-piste destinations near Innsbruck. Snow-making covers 80% of the pistes. Muttereralm adds 16.5km of predominantly blue and easy red runs between 950m and 1,887m, with 100% snow-making, a children's area with a fairytale forest, and a certified ski school. The season at Axamer Lizum typically runs from late November to late April, while Muttereralm operates from mid-December to mid-March.
The proximity to Innsbruck is the ace card. The Tyrolean capital is one of the most beautiful cities in the Alps - a compact, historic city centre with baroque architecture, the famous Golden Roof, excellent restaurants, vibrant bars, and the cultural depth of a university city. The SKI plus CITY Pass Stubai Innsbruck covers both Axamer Lizum and Muttereralm alongside 10 other ski resorts and city attractions, giving you the option to ski a different area every day and explore Innsbruck in between. A free shuttle bus runs from Innsbruck to Axamer Lizum, and Muttereralm is reachable by tram and bus in around 15 minutes. It's a ski holiday with a city dimension that only Innsbruck can provide.
