Vues spectaculairesThe Stubai Valley (Stubaital) south of Innsbruck is home to four linked ski areas, over 80 glaciers, and more than 100 peaks above 3,000m - and the traditional villages of Neustift and Fulpmes are its heart. Neustift im Stubaital sits at 993m at the head of the valley, just a short bus ride from Austria's largest glacier ski area - the Stubai Glacier, which reaches 3,210m and provides skiing from October through to June. Fulpmes, further down the valley, sits at the base of Schlick 2000, a north-facing ski area in the shadow of the Kalkkögel peaks - known as the 'Dolomites of the Austrian Tyrol' for their dramatic limestone spires. Together, the Stubai Super Ski Pass covers around 105km of pistes across four areas: the Stubai Glacier (65km), Schlick 2000, the Elferbahnen (above Neustift), and the Serlesbahnen (above Mieders).
The Stubai Glacier is the headline attraction. At 3,210m, the Schaufelspitze towers over a vast high-alpine ski area with 26 lifts, wide open glacier runs, and world-class freeride terrain including the legendary 10km Wilde Grub'n off-piste descent with 1,500m of vertical drop. Around 50km of the glacier terrain is graded green or blue - remarkably gentle for a glacier, and a unique opportunity for beginners to ski at 3,000m. The glacier season runs from early October to late June, making this one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps. Below the glacier, Schlick 2000 provides a more intimate, forested ski experience with secret freeride terrain that Innsbruck locals consider their private stash.
The valley has a rich mountaineering heritage. Reverend Franz Senn, one of the founding fathers of the Austrian and German Alpine Club, lived and is buried in Neustift, and the Stubai Mountain Guides Association has been operating since 1891. Today, Neustift is a lively village with restaurants, bars, and shops, while Fulpmes is a quieter, more traditional community with an indoor pool, ice rink, and wellness facilities. The Stubaital is just 25km south of Innsbruck - around 30 minutes by car or bus - and the STB tram connects Innsbruck directly to Fulpmes. Free ski buses link all valley villages to all ski areas, and the SKI plus CITY Pass covers the Stubai areas alongside Innsbruck's other ski resorts and city attractions.
