Vues spectaculairesRed Mountain is one of Canada's oldest and most characterful ski resorts, and it wears that history well. The roots go back to the 1890s, when gold miners in the town of Rossland, British Columbia, strapped wooden planks to their boots and raced down the mountain for entertainment. That independent, no-nonsense spirit still runs through everything here. There's no purpose-built village, no corporate gloss, and no pretence - just a big, serious mountain above a charming old mining town in the Monashee range, attracting skiers who care more about the snow under their feet than the thread count on their pillows.
The skiing spans 3,850 acres across three interconnected peaks - Red Mountain, Granite Mountain, and Grey Mountain - with 119 runs served by eight lifts. The vertical drop is 890m from a 2,075m summit, and the terrain skews heavily towards experienced skiers: roughly 23% advanced and 26% expert, with steep gladed tree runs, open bowls, and chutes that have earned the resort a cult following among powder enthusiasts. But it's not all steep and deep - 17% of the terrain is graded beginner and 34% intermediate, so there's a genuine spread across abilities. The season runs from early December to early April, and the interior BC location delivers consistent dry powder.
Rossland itself is a big part of the appeal. This heritage mining town, perched at 1,023m in the West Kootenay region, has a walkable main street lined with independent cafes, restaurants, and shops, and a community of residents who chose to live here because of the mountain. The atmosphere is warm, authentic, and refreshingly unpolished. For UK travellers after a Canadian ski experience that feels real rather than curated, Red Mountain and Rossland are a combination that's hard to replicate anywhere else.
