Resort de luxeStowe is the resort that put New England skiing on the map. Tucked beneath Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 1,339m, this is a place where a picture-postcard New England village meets proper mountain skiing - white-steepled churches, covered bridges, and clapboard inns sitting alongside a mountain that has been drawing skiers since the 1930s. The town of Stowe predates the ski resort by well over a century, and that history gives it a depth of character that purpose-built resorts simply cannot replicate. For UK visitors looking for an American ski holiday with genuine cultural charm and a mountain that rewards good skiing, Stowe is a compelling choice.
The skiing is spread across two interconnected peaks - Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak - linked by a gondola at the base. Together they provide around 485 acres of skiable terrain served by 13 lifts, with 116 trails and a vertical drop of 719m. Stowe averages roughly 8 metres of snow per season, and extensive snowmaking covers the majority of trails, keeping conditions reliable even when natural snowfall is patchy. The terrain has a strong lean toward intermediates and experts, with the Front Four trails on Mansfield ranking among the most celebrated steep runs in eastern North America. The season typically runs from late November into mid-April.
The village of Stowe, set a few kilometres down the Mountain Road from the resort base, is where much of the off-slope life happens. It is a proper Vermont town - independent restaurants, craft breweries, art galleries, and a main street that feels like stepping into a New England postcard. The combination of serious skiing and a town with genuine year-round life is what has kept Stowe at the top of the East Coast skiing conversation for nearly a century.
