Ylläs spans a single fell shared by two authentic villages: Äkäslompolo (north) and Ylläsjärvi (south), so you can ski both sides in one day. The area has 62 pistes, 53 km (32 mi) of marked runs, eight over 2 km (1.24 mi) and several over 3 km (1.86 mi), with up to 464 m (1522 ft) of vertical from a 719 m (2358 ft) summit. Ylläs sits between the villages of Ylläsjärvi (south) and Äkäslompolo (north), with lifts taking you to the top so you can ski down either side. The Äkäslompolo side looks out over Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and offers routes for every level. The Ylläsjärvi side faces the sun and is home to Finland’s longest groomed runs, up to 3 km (1.86 mi) from the summit.
This side is all about easy access and long descents. The Ylläs 1 gondola takes you to the top in around seven minutes, where several of Finland’s longest pistes begin. The lower slopes are gentle and suit beginners, while the upper slopes are steeper with solid red and black options. You’ll also find three snow parks here: Pro Park for experienced riders, a progression Snow Park near Ylläs Express, and a Mini Park by the Perhe lift. Thanks to its sunny aspect, this side is a favourite in spring. The ski lift system is varied and efficient, with carpets, button and T-bar lifts, a chairlift and the main gondola.

This side has a big mountain feel and wide, open fell terrain with classic views into Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The Kuru lift brings you close to the top, and the area stretches roughly 3 km (1.86 mi) from the north to the western side of the mountain. Known zones include the historic Varkaankuru slopes, where natural snow often lasts well into spring, and the broad Lännenlevelä run, up to 200 m (656 ft) wide, served by the Aurinko Express 4 seater chair. There’s terrain for all ski abilities: steeper lines from the upper plateau, and easy runs (great for big, clean carving turns and confidence building), lower down for children and first-timers.
