Security Deposits

When travelling, many hotels, apartments, and vacation rentals require a security deposit at or before check-in. This is completely normal and helps properties cover things like accidental damage, lost keys, or unpaid charges. Deposits are always returned as long as nothing is damaged.

How Deposits Are Taken

  • Credit card hold (most common): A temporary “freeze” on your card. No money leaves your account and it’s released after checkout (usually 10–14 business days).

  • Card payment & refund: Some apartments charge the deposit and refund it later (10–14 business days depending on your bank).

Typical Deposit Amounts

  • Hotels: €50–€150

  • Apartments: €200–€500

  • Villas/holiday homes: €200–€1,000+

What to Expect by Region

  • Spain/Italy/France: Apartments often request €100–€300+; hotels use card holds.

  • Germany/Austria: Mostly card pre-authorisations.

  • UK/Ireland: Hotels use holds; apartments may take £150–£500.

  • Eastern Europe: Lower amounts

Tips for a Smooth Check-In

  • Bring a credit card (refunds on debit cards take longer).

  • Check your booking confirmation for deposit details.

  • Keep your deposit receipt.
