My Courmayeur ski holiday: skiing in T-shirts, Italian mountain dinners, and a season finale with friends

A spring weekend in Courmayeur with friends: soft snow, T-shirt afternoons, and long Italian dinners.

Rachel spent the last weekend of the season in Courmayeur with friends, skiing soft spring snow under Mont Blanc. She told us about afternoons warm enough to ski in a T-shirt, the Italian mountain restaurants they ate at every night, and the red run she rather wishes she had checked the colour of first.

"I would definitely go back, especially because I had such a great time with my friends."

What surprised you most about Courmayeur?

How diverse the people we met were. There were skiers from all over the world, including several advanced skiers spending the entire season in the Mont Blanc region. Meeting people from so many places over après-ski was a real highlight.

Where did you stay, and how was the food?

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Courmayeur. We had breakfast at our hotel every morning, with a great buffet to fuel us for the mountains. At night, we ate at some adorable Italian mountain restaurants with great wine and bites.

What was your most memorable run?

When I accidentally ended up on a red trail. I hadn't skied in eight years, so I'd been sticking to blues, and I was a little overconfident, apparently. I was terrified and took a big fall. But I'm happy to say I got back on the slopes the very next day.

What do you wish you'd known before going?

That it would take some time to collect our ski pass and equipment. We lost track of where we needed to go, which meant a later start on our first day. In retrospect, we should've woken up earlier and planned better.

How was the snow and weather in April?

I was in Courmayeur during the last week of the season, so the weather was warm and sunny. By the afternoon, we could ski in just a T-shirt. Mornings had soft, easy snow, though it got a bit choppy by the end of the day.

How's the après-ski in Courmayeur?

It was your typical European party: great music, great drinks, and an amazing vibe.

What was the highlight of your trip?

Really just spending time with my friends: driving through the mountains, unwinding at the spa, and of course, the après-ski.

Would you go back, and who would you recommend Courmayeur to?

I would definitely go back, especially because I had such a great time with my friends. I'd recommend it for groups of friends of all ski levels. Courmayeur has some beginner slopes, so it's not as intimidating as Chamonix.
