My Schladming ski holiday: uncrowded weekday skiing and a resort that's just as fun off the slopes as it is on them

Twelve friends, one long weekend, and a ski holiday that kept everyone happy, whether they came for the runs or the lively après scene. Maja told us why Schladming is her go-to pick for a group trip.

Twelve friends, one long weekend, and a trip that somehow suited all of them. Maja grew up in Austria and keeps picking Schladming for group trips: four linked mountains above a proper working town, and bars on the slopes that a few of her friends never got past. Here's how the weekend went, and what she'd change next time.

"It's especially great for groups of friends, because there's so much entertainment and something for everyone."

What's your favourite run in Schladming?

The last part of the famous Planai, where you ski down to the final destination: the Tenne club, which is very famous in Schladming (you can ski there directly). It's the best run, because everybody going down is either drunk from the bars on the mountains or completely tired and exhausted. Being a group of 12 people, all with different priorities, made that really fun.

Where did you stay, and where would you stay next time?

I don't remember the name, but it was a very small, privately owned house with very kind and loving owners. We needed a couple of rooms, and it wasn't the main season, so it was quiet.

Next time, I'd rent somewhere in the centre of Schladming, near the Planai and the Tenne, so you can ski there and walk back to your accommodation. Ours was somewhere we needed a taxi for. It was fine, but being very close makes it even more fun. Just be aware of the noise at night, since it has a busy nightlife.

What surprised you most about Schladming?

That there really weren't that many people. It wasn't the high season, but it was also great because we went on a Thursday and Friday, so we had a lot of the slopes to ourselves.

How was the snow and weather in March?

It was good. Although it was already March, the conditions were great for enjoying some days on the slopes.

How's the après-ski in Schladming?

Schladming has incredible bars, not only in town but especially on the mountains. Some of my friends didn't even make it skiing, they spent all their time in the bars on the slopes! Schladming has some of the best clubs, bars, and entertainment options in all of Austria.

Would you go back, and who would you recommend Schladming to?

Yes. I would go back for the amazing skiing, and for the fun and entertainment. It's especially great for groups of friends, because there's so much entertainment and something for everyone. There's truly so much to see and enjoy.
