Le Grand Massif ski area overview

Le Grand Massif offers a varied and well-connected ski experience, with each of its five resorts (Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns, and Sixt Fer à Cheval) offering its own local flavour, terrain, and strengths.

Flaine

  • Pistes: 64 (8 green, 26 blue, 25 red, 5 black)
  • Lifts: 24
  • Local piste length: 146 km (~90.7 mi)

Flaine is the highest and most snow-sure resort in the Grand Massif, with a wide natural bowl, fast lift access and big views toward Mont Blanc. The skiing is open, sunny and perfect for intermediates who love long runs and smooth carving terrain. Advanced skiers can tackle steep blacks like Diamant Noir or explore the excellent off-piste in the Gers Bowl. While there’s no snow park, Flaine has several fun zones and is a great choice for confident skiers wanting fast access to high-mountain terrain.

Les Carroz

  • Pistes: 34 (5 green, 16 blue, 9 red, 4 black)
  • Lifts: 14
  • Local piste length: 37 km (~23.0 mi)

Les Carroz is a traditional mountain village with a relaxed feel and excellent tree lined slopes, ideal for skiing in low visibility or snowy days. The terrain offers a good mix of blues and reds for intermediates, while advanced skiers can head to black runs like Styx or explore freeride terrain off Tête des Saix. The village also features two beginner areas and wide greens like Gentiane, making it a balanced choice for mixed-ability groups.

Morillon

  • Pistes: 17 (3 green, 9 blue, 3 red, 2 black)
  • Lifts: 9
  • Local piste length: 24 km (~14.9 mi)

Morillon is a family-friendly resort with relaxed forest skiing, a well-equipped beginner zone at Morillon 1100, and easy access to the wider Grand Massif. The standout run here is Marvel, a scenic green piste that winds through the trees for over 5 km (3 mi). Intermediates have a good choice of cruisy blue and red runs, while advanced skiers can drop into local black pistes or venture toward Flaine for more challenges. Freestyle riders can also check out the JamPark for jumps, rails and fun features.

Samoëns

  • Pistes: 33 (approx. mix: 5 green, 11 blue, 11 red, 6 black)
  • Lifts: 14

Samoëns blends Alpine charm with direct gondola access to a wide range of slopes. The ski station at Samoëns 1600 is perfect for beginners, with a quiet, separate learning area and wide, forgiving greens. From there, the terrain opens up to excellent blue and red runs across the Grand Massif. Intermediates will enjoy long, tree-lined pistes, while advanced riders can access the Combe de Gers bowl or the area’s steeper blacks. The village is known for its peaceful vibe, scenic backdrop, and great visibility in bad weather thanks to the forested slopes.

Sixt Fer à Cheval

  • Pistes: 6 (2 green, 4 blue)
  • Lifts: 4
  • Local piste length: 3 km

Sixt is the smallest and quietest resort in the Grand Massif, offering gentle slopes, beautiful scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere. While the local ski area is limited, it connects with the larger domain via the famous Piste des Cascades, a 14 km (8.6 mi) blue run from Flaine down to Sixt. Beginners will appreciate the quiet drag lifts and relaxed pace here, while more experienced skiers can catch the ski bus to Samoëns or Morillon for more variety. Sixt is also popular for cross-country skiing, with over 60 km (37 mi) of trails in stunning surroundings.
