A big group, a chalet with a hot tub, and a town worth taking a day off the slopes for. Katie went back to Chamonix in March with family and friends, and came home with a long list of runs, restaurants and one very loud karaoke night. Here's how the week went.
"It was quite possibly the most peaceful skiing I've ever done."
The top of the Flégère lift is dreamy. There are cruisy runs like Evettes and Trappe if you want to relax, or you can take the Index chairlift higher for the reds and blacks if you're after more of a challenge. You could easily spend a whole day just on this one part of the mountain.
Late March is incredible when the sun's out, and we got really lucky with the snow: a big powder dump landed the day before we arrived, so the conditions were perfect. By the end of the week it was classic spring skiing, with firm mornings, softer afternoons and still plenty to ski.
We stayed at Chalet Peace and Love, near Plan Praz. It was cosy, clean, and spotless, with amazing views and a hot tub. It's perfect for six to seven people.
The town itself. Chamonix is worth taking a morning or a full day off the slopes for a slow brunch or long lunch, and a mooch around the shops. There's a vintage second-hand called AfterSki on Rue du Docteur Paccard, which has some amazing retro skiwear. It's brilliant for non-skiers too. My mum doesn't ski, and between the shops, a lovely yoga studio and an easy gondola ride up to La Bergerie to meet us for lunch, she was never short of things to do.
La Calèche, Le Carrousel, and MUMMA Restaurant were all excellent. For a great lunch and a crisp pint on the piste, head to La Bergerie de Planpraz. La Folie Douce's Cabaret Dinner at La Petite Cuisine is also brilliant. Go for the 6:30pm sitting with kids, or the later one if you're after more of the party. And if you fancy staying in, order from Annapurna II via chamoneat.fr. BAM Karaoke Box is super fun with private rooms and drinks brought to you.
Book your restaurants in advance. You can usually find somewhere to eat on the fly, but if there's somewhere specific you want to try, get it booked. Expect a deposit of around €20 a head, so it's worth being sure of your plans first.
Probably being first out on the piste one morning. It was completely clear, the freshest corduroy, and nobody else around. It was quite possibly the most peaceful skiing I've ever done. A close second was karaoke night at BAM, which got very loud, very quickly.
Absolutely, I'd go again in a heartbeat. Between the range of slopes, the ridiculous views and the town itself, it works brilliantly for groups, families and couples.
