My Les Arcs ski holiday: great runs by day, great company by night

A week in Les Arcs with friends: long runs above the clouds, cooking in the chalet, and a birthday that ended in a race for the last lift home.

A four-bedroom chalet, a supermarket run on day one, and a week of long runs above the clouds. Yuval's trip to Les Arcs with friends came down to three things: the skiing, the cooking, and one birthday at La Folie Douce that very nearly ended in a two-hour bus ride home.

I've been skiing and snowboarding since I was six. I started in Australia and then moved to bigger resorts in Europe. I try to go every year and can't imagine a winter without it.

"You can go down for 20 minutes, and then you end up at a mountain bar that not everyone can reach."

What was the best run of your trip?

When we left all the beginners behind and took the longest chairlift up. You get so high that you're in the clouds and can't really see when the lift is over, and then you arrive and you're the only ones up there. The slope is wide, and it runs between the trees, so you can ride between them and do mini jumps. It's one of those rides where you can go down for 20 minutes, and then you end up at a mountain bar that not everyone can reach, and you may never find again.

Where did you stay, and how was the food?

We stayed in a four-bedroom chalet in Les Arcs 2000. We went to the supermarket at the beginning of our trip and cooked breakfast and dinner every day, which was a massive highlight. It was super fun cooking together while singing Mariah Carey.

What surprised you most about Les Arcs?

The resort is split across a few villages. La Folie Douce is in Les Arcs 1800, and we were staying in Les Arcs 2000. If you don't catch the last chairlift (at 17:00), you need to take a two-hour bus back to your chalet!

What's your top tip for anyone heading to Les Arcs?

Don't get too drunk at La Folie Douce (but do). Also, stay in Les Arcs 1800, since it's newer and has a better centre. And make time to go to the spa.

How was the snow and weather in March?

The snow was great, with a lot of bluebird days.

Would you go back to Les Arcs, and who would you recommend it to?

Yes, I loved it! The vibe was fun, and the runs were fun. I'd recommend it to anyone, because it has something for everyone.

What was the highlight of your trip?

We celebrated my partner's birthday at La Folie Douce, and we were those people dancing on the tables. But as soon as we saw 16:55, everyone ran to their skis so we could catch the last chairlift. The problem was, nobody could get their skis on! Everyone kept falling and belly laughing, and it was hilarious. We eventually reached the chairlift on our bums and were cheering the whole way home.
