Hemsedal, Norway

You ski from three summits with big views, then glide onto tree-lined runs lower down. The base is compact, with lodging, rentals, cafés, the children’s zone and Lodge Express all right by each other, so moving around with kids or mixed groups is easy.

Skiing in Hemsedal

Beginners: Start beside SkiStar Lodge in the children’s area: button lifts, conveyors and gentle greens keep things stress free, and the ski school meets right there. When you’re ready, step up to longer greens from mid-mountain.

Intermediates: Hemsedal is made for cruising. Expect long, well-groomed blues and steady reds from the peaks to the valley, with that 6 km (3.7 mi) top to bottom lap when you want a non stop run.

Advanced: When you want a challenge, you’ll find steeper sections, firm morning corduroy, and blacks with real pitch; plus short hikes and nearby lines where you can dip into soft snow right beside the groomers.

Cross-country skiing: You’ve got 250+ km (155+ mi) of trails in the area. From the ski centre, tracks run east toward Hemsedal centre and west toward Tuv, with an extra link starting at the bottom of Totten 2 to slope 16/Skigaarden. Easy options for a short glide, or make a day of it.

Snowboarding: Parks are a highlight. Start in the base-area zone, then move up to SnowPark Blue and SnowPark Red for bigger lines. The Fun Ride on slope #32 adds berms, rollers and small jumps for all ages.

Families

Everything sits close to the lifts, so you spend more time skiing and less time walking. The children’s area has Valle’s Ski Land, conveyors, easy slopes and warm places to break for lunch plus toilets, a playground and BBQ spots nearby. Booking lessons and rentals is simple, and many stays are a short walk or ski from the snow.

Activities

Snow activities: Sledding, dog sledding, backcountry skiing, ski touring, avalanche courses, ice climbing, winter horse back riding, ice skating.

Non-skiing activities: Indoor climbing, cinema, golf simulator, day spa, workshops, swimming pool.

Hemsedal après ski

Weekends get lively and fun, with classic after-ski spots by the slopes and sunny terraces when the weather plays ball. Midweek is calmer think relaxed drinks and simple food near the base so you can choose the pace that suits.

Hemsedal restaurants

Food is easy and close by. Lodgen Spiseri sits next to Lodge Express and runs from breakfast through dinner with pizza, cocoa and a broad menu; Fjellkafeen between Hollvin Express and Lodge Express is perfect for a warm lunch, coffee and waffles mid-run; Hollvin Restaurant & Bar in the heart of the ski centre handles pizzas, pasta and après with live music most days; up on the ridge, Lynx at Skarsnuten pairs Nordic meets and Italian plates with big valley views.
