One sheet for the whole Tignes-Val d'Isère area. The Tignes half is the western side: the four Tignes villages around the lake, Tovière above them, the Aiguille Percée to the north and the Grande Motte glacier at the top.
The Tignes-only pass covers this half. The full area pass adds Val d'Isère on the eastern side of the same sheet and takes the total past 300 km, and the crossing is a single lift over Tovière.
Tignes ski resort guide · Tignes - Val d'Isère
Where Val d'Isère is a village strung along a valley floor with mountains on one side, Tignes is a bowl with a lake in it and slopes on every side, at an altitude where trees have given up entirely. That bareness is the first thing to read off the map: there is almost no shelter on this half, which is what makes it magnificent on a clear day and disorienting in a white-out. The second thing is the Grande Motte, sitting above everything at 3,456 m with its own funicular, and skiing on it is a different proposition from the rest of the sheet.
GreenBlueRedBlack150 km on the Tignes side, 300 km across the full area, 1,550 m to 3,456 m
Tignes le Lac, Val Claret, Le Lavachet and Tignes 1800 ring the lake, and the runs come down into all of them. Broad, open and mostly blue and red, with the nursery ground at Val Claret.
Ski-in ski-out is the norm here in a way it is not in Val d'Isère, and that convenience is the main reason people choose this side.
A funicular bored through the mountain climbs to 3,032 m and a cable car takes you on to the top. The runs off it are long, high and snow-certain, and the glacier opens for summer skiing after the rest of the map has shut.
The descent from the top back to Val Claret is around 1,400 m of vertical in one go and the best run on this half of the sheet.
Tovière on the eastern rim is the crossing to Val d'Isère and carries the sheet's steepest marked pistes. The Aiguille Percée to the north is the quieter corner, with the long Sache descent dropping to Tignes les Brevières.
The Sache is the one run on the Tignes side that gets you below the treeline. Worth saving for a flat-light afternoon.
Good ground at Val Claret and around the lake, and the altitude means the snow underfoot is dependable all season. The weakness is weather: there is nothing to see by when the cloud comes down, and that is harder on a nervous beginner than steepness.
Excellent, and the glacier is the reason to come. With the full pass, Val d'Isère is one lift away over Tovière and doubles the map.
The Tovière blacks, the Sache, and off-piste that is among the most serious in France — the Tour de Pramecou and the terrain off the Grande Motte. Glaciated and crevassed, so a guide is not optional.
The other half of this same sheet and the same pass, over the Tovière ridge — lower, more sheltered, with trees, and a village with far more going on.
Down the Tarentaise on the Paradiski pass, and the usual alternative if you want comparable scale with trees and a gentler feel.
Twenty minutes down the same road on its own small pass, and where people come out of this valley for untracked snow and an empty mountain.
